Jamie was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, on February 11, 1973. He was drafted by Detroit in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft and was Detroit's 2nd choice, 32nd overall in the second round. Jamie made his NHL debut on October 8, 1995 at Edmonton. His first point was an assist on November 4, 1995 vs. Dallas. He was voted the best defenseman and MVP in the 1992-93 season for Lethbridge in the Western Hockey League.
